California has not adopted 390.21 of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSRs), but does require intrastate carriers to obtain a USDOT number.
California’s marking requirements apply to:
- A self-propelled vehicle listed in 34500 of the California Vehicle Code; and
- Any other motor vehicle used to transport property for compensation (for-hire).
California Identification Number (CA Number) | A motor carrier (except a household goods carrier), whose principal place of business is in California, who operates from a terminal in California, or who is required to be licensed pursuant to §32000.5 of the California Vehicle Code, must obtain and display a California Identification (CA) number issued by the California Highway Patrol (CHP). California also requires interstate carriers that are both delivering and picking up loads in California to obtain a CA number from the CHP. In order to obtain a CA number, a motor carrier must first obtain a USDOT number from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). The motor carrier's USDOT number must be provided as part of the CA number application process. The CA number must be displayed on both sides of each vehicle, or on both sides of at least one motor vehicle in each combination. If the carrier displays a valid US DOT number, the CA number does not have to be displayed on the vehicle. |
Household Goods Carriers | Intrastate household goods carriers must display their Cal-T (permit) number issued by the Bureau of Household Goods and Services on both doors of the power unit. |
