Arkansas has adopted 390.21 of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSRs), including all future amendments.*

Section 390.21 applies to any self-propelled or towed motor vehicle used on a highway in intrastate and interstate commerce when the vehicle has a gross vehicle weight rating, gross combination weight rating, gross vehicle weight, or gross combination weight of 10,001 pounds or more, or is of any size transporting a placardable amount of hazardous materials.

*Arkansas has adopted the USDOT marking regulations in 390.21 for intrastate CMVs. However, the state is not currently enforcing this regulation. Check with the state regarding any changes in this enforcement policy.

Additional Requirements All common or contract (for-hire) carriers must display on both sides of the vehicle their:
  • Name and
  • Certificate or permit number.

If the vehicle is leased, the identification must show the name of the lessee.
The characters must be of a sufficient size to be clearly visible at a distance of at least 50 ft. during daylight hours while the vehicle is not in motion.
Vehicles identified in compliance with the requirements of the US DOT will be considered as meeting the requirements of this rule as long as they are properly registered with the Arkansas Highway Commission (if required.)
