Aisles and passageways must be appropriately marked but do not require marking by painted yellow lines only. Painted yellow lines are usually recognized as the most convenient and inexpensive way to mark aisles and passageways. Dirt floors or floors having continuous concentrations of sand or dust would render the application of painted floor markings infeasible and impractical.
Other appropriate methods include marking pillars, powder stripping, flags, traffic cones, and barrels. Many other devices are considered appropriate as long as recognition of such is included in the vehicle operator and employee training programs.
The lines used to delineate the aisles may be any color so long as they clearly define the area considered as aisle space. The lines may be composed of dots, square, strip, or continuous, but they too must define the aisle area. The recommended width of aisle markings varies from two inches to six inches; therefore, any width two inches or more is considered acceptable. The recommended width of aisles as at least three wider that the largest equipment to be utilized, or a minimum of four feet.
The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Z535.1-1998, Safety Color Code, recommends black, white, yellow, or a combination of black and yellow for traffic markings. Note: ANSI Z535.1-2002, Safety Color Code, and later editions no longer have safety color meanings, which appeared in the 1998 and earlier editions.
