Both OSHA and The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have said that there is insufficient evidence to recommend the use of back belts as a back injury prevention measure. In fact, if workers falsely believe they are protected when wearing belts, they may attempt to lift more than they would without a belt, posing a risk of injury to the worker. If employers want to employ the use of back belts, they should consult a medical professional or an ergonomist for additional information.
