New Jersey law allows private employers to offer direct deposit but requires the employee’s written consent. Employees are permitted to cancel their consent at any time.
For state and some local employers, direct deposit is mandatory for employees hired after 2014. Local school boards are also permitted to require direct deposit for payroll.
