Private employers in Georgia may offer direct deposit for payroll, but they cannot mandate it without authorization from the employee.

For public employees, the state requires all employees who are paid through the state’s central payroll system to be enrolled in direct deposit. Exemptions may be made in cases of “extreme hardship” such as the inability to acquire an account at a financial institution.
