Utah has adopted Sec. 390.21 of the Federal Regulations.
Section 390.21 applies to an intrastate commercial vehicle:
Vehicles operating solely intrastate must display the name of the motor carrier and Utah DOT number.
Vehicles with a Utah base plate exceeding 12,000 pounds gross laden weight must display the gross registered weight preceded by the letters GVW on both the left and right sides of the vehicle. Vehicles registered in combination must display the gross registered weight for the combination on the power unit.
Farm operation exception — A commercial vehicle primarily used by a farmer for the production of agricultural product is exempt from display of DOT number, name, and address. However, they are required to have the gross registered weight displayed on Utah-plated vehicles with a gross laden weight exceeding 12,000 pounds.
All commercial motor carriers (for-hire and private) operating interstate are subject to the marking requirements of 49 CFR 390.21 which requires all CMVs to display, on both sides of the power unit, the US DOT number and the legal name of the business entity that owns or controls the motor carrier operation, or the “doing business as” (DBA) name, as it appears on the Form MCS-150.
Any new or used commercial vehicles added to a motor carrier’s fleet must be identified with the US DOT number and single trade name before being put into service.
The regulations do not require the MC number or the city/state to be displayed on the vehicle.
