Federal regulations
Tennessee has adopted Part 391 of the Federal Regulations with some modifications.
Applicability
Part 391 applies to commercial motor vehicles operated in intrastate commerce to transport property that have a gross vehicle weight rating or gross combination weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more, or a motor vehicle of any gross vehicle weight transporting hazardous materials.
Age
A driver must be 21 years of age.
Exceptions: A driver may obtain a Class A or B license at age 19 if no special endorsements are required, the vehicle is operated within 100 miles of the job, and the driver is solely intrastate. A driver may obtain a Class B license at age 18 if the above conditions are met.
Driver qualification file
A driver qualification file (Sec. 391.51) is required.
Operator’s license
Tennessee’s driver’s license classes are as follows:
Class | Description |
Class A | Any combination of vehicles with a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) in excess of 26,000 pounds, provided the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds. |
Class B | Any single vehicle with a GVWR in excess of 26,000 pounds or any such vehicle towing a vehicle not in excess of 10,000 pounds GVWR. |
Class C | Any single vehicle with a GVWR not in excess of 26,000 pounds, when the vehicle is required to be placarded for hazardous materials, designed to transport more than 15 passengers, including the driver, or used as a school bus. |
Class D | Any single vehicle with a GVWR not in excess of 26,000 pounds, or a combination vehicle with a GCWR not in excess of 26,000 pounds |
Class M | Motorcycle. May be used in conjunction with another class of license. |
Class P | Required for any person who is learning to operate a particular class of vehicle on an instructional basis only. |
