Federal regulations
Nevada has adopted Part 391 of the Federal Regulations.
Applicability
Part 391 applies to intrastate vehicles with a gross vehicle weight, gross vehicle weight rating, gross combination weight rating, or gross combination weight of 26,001 or more pounds, or any vehicle transporting hazardous materials as defined in NRS 459.7024.
Age
Drivers must be at least 21 years old to obtain a commercial driver’s license. A restricted commercial driver’s license may be issued to an intrastate driver not hauling a placardable amount of hazardous materials or transporting passengers. Such drivers may be 18 years old.
Driver qualification file
A driver qualification file (Sec. 391.51) is required.
Operator’s license
The commercial vehicle classification system is as follows:
Class | Description |
Class A | Any combination of motor vehicles with a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 pounds or more, provided the vehicle being towed has a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of more than 10,000 pounds. |
Class B | Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing a vehicle weighing 10,000 pounds or less GVWR. |
Class C | Any single vehicle or combination of vehicles that does not meet the definition of Group A or Group B, but that either is designed to transport 16 or more passengers including the driver, or is placarded for hazardous materials. |
Class C (non-commercial) | Cars, vans, pickups, mopeds, and other vehicles with a GVWR of 26,000 pounds or less; allows towing of a vehicle with a GVWR of 10,000 pounds or less. |
