Intrastate
Mississippi has adopted §390.21 of the Federal Regulations.*
*Mississippi has adopted the USDOT marking regulations in §390.21 for intrastate CMVs. However, the state is not currently enforcing this regulation. Check with the state regarding any changes in this enforcement policy.
All intrastate motor carriers of property operating under authority granted by Mississippi (certificate or permit) must have painted or stenciled on both sides of the body or cab of each vehicle operating on the highways of the State the following:
- Name of operator as shown on the certificate in lettering 21/2 inches high.
- Certificate or permit number or numbers with the prefix MISS. P.S.C. in letters/figures 11/2 inches high.
- A unit number assigned to the vehicle by the carrier in lettering 11/2 inches high.
All letters and figures must be at least 11/2 inches in height and must be of a distinctively different coloring from that of the cab or body of the vehicle.
The information described above must be removed from any vehicle before it is disposed of.
Interstate and intrastate: Interstate carriers with intrastate operating authority from the Mississippi DOT are in compliance by displaying the legal company name and USDOT number. Intrastate authority registration is verified via the DOT number.
Interstate
All commercial motor carriers (for-hire and private) operating interstate are subject to the marking requirements of 49 CFR 390.21 which requires all CMVs to display, on both sides of the power unit, the US DOT number and the legal name of the business entity that owns or controls the motor carrier operation, or the “doing business as” (DBA) name, as it appears on the Form MCS-150.
Any new or used commercial vehicles added to a motor carrier’s fleet must be identified with the US DOT number and single trade name before being put into service.
The regulations do not require the MC Number or city/state to be displayed on the vehicle.
