Intrastate
The following carriers must display their name and US DOT number on the power unit of each vehicle:
- Intrastate for-hire motor vehicles, regardless of weight.
- Intrastate private and exempt vehicles operating vehicles over 10,000 pounds GVW.
- Carriers that transport hazardous material of a type or quantity that requires the vehicle to be placarded.
Vehicle identification information must be displayed in letters that contrast sharply with the vehicle's background color and must be readily legible from 50 feet during daylight hours while the vehicle is stationary. If the name of a person other than the operating carrier appears on the vehicle, the words “operated by” must precede the name of the operating carrier.
The following intrastate vehicles are not required to have a US DOT number for registration, or display their name and US DOT number on the vehicle:
- A farm truck that is not used in interstate commerce;
- A vehicle that is not used in intrastate commerce or interstate commerce (Vehicles used exclusively for personal activities);
- A vehicle that is owned and used solely in the transaction of official business by the federal government, the state, or any political subdivision; or
- An individual operating a pipeline welding truck. A pipeline welding truck is defined as a motor vehicle that is traveling in the state in which the vehicle is registered or another state, is owned by a welder, is a pick-up style truck, is equipped with a welding rig that is used in the construction or maintenance of pipelines, and has a gross vehicle weight and combination weight rating and weight of 15,000 pounds or less.
Interstate
All commercial motor carriers (for-hire and private) operating interstate are subject to the marking requirements of 49 CFR 390.21 which requires all CMVs to display, on both sides of the power unit, the US DOT number and the legal name of the business entity that owns or controls the motor carrier operation, or the “doing business as” (DBA) name, as it appears on the Form MCS-150.
Any new or used commercial vehicles added to a motor carrier’s fleet must be identified with the US DOT number and single trade name before being put into service.
The regulations do not require the MC number or city/state to be displayed on the vehicle.
