In Minnesota, private employers must provide reimbursement to employees for certain expenses upon their termination of employment. Reimbursable expenses include things like uniforms, consumable supplies, or purchased or rented equipment that can’t be used outside of employment. When such reimbursement is made, employers may require employees to surrender the item(s) for which the employer has paid reimbursement.
If an employer makes deductions from employee wages for the cost of the above-listed items, the deduction may not cause the employee’s wages to fall below the state’s minimum wage (which is higher than federal minimum wage).
State employees are entitled to reimbursement for expenses related to approved travel on state business. Each agency may have its own policies and procedures related to travel expense reimbursement. In some cases, the amount of reimbursement may be negotiated as part of an employee’s collective bargaining agreement. Other expenses (e.g., supplies, postage) may also be reimbursable.
