Massachusetts has adopted Part 393 of the Federal Regulations.
Part 393 applies to vehicles having a gross vehicle weight rating, gross vehicle weight, gross combination weight rating, or gross combination weight of 10,001 pounds or more that are used for the transportation of property, and vehicles transporting a placardable amount of hazardous materials.
Every commercial motor vehicle, or trailer weighing, with its load, more than 12,000 pounds, and used to deliver gasoline or other flammable material, shall be equipped with an audible warning system when the vehicle’s transmission is in reverse.
Every motor vehicle truck with dump bodies shall be equipped with an adequate audible warning system to alert the operator when the dump body is in an upright and elevated position.
No requirements.
Every vehicle or trailer must be equipped with suitable guards which will effectively reduce the spray or splash to the rear of mud, water or slush caused by the rear wheels of the motor vehicle or trailer.
Every motor vehicle must be provided with a muffler or other suitable device to prevent any unnecessary noise. No such muffler may be modified with a cutout, bypass or other device for increasing noise.
Studded tires are permissible in Massachusetts between November 1 and May 1.
All trucks which weigh 4,000 lbs. or more unloaded and all tractors, trailers or combinations must be equipped with one set of safety chock blocks. This requirement does not apply to a vehicle equipped with positive spring-loaded air parking brakes.
