Idaho has adopted Part 391 of the Federal Regulations with some exceptions.
Applicability
Intrastate carriers operating commercial motor vehicles transporting property with a gross vehicle weight, gross vehicle weight rating, gross combination weight, or gross combination weight rating greater than 26,000 pounds, and intrastate carriers transporting placardable quantities of hazardous material subject to the authority of the Idaho State Police, must comply with all of Part 391.
Intrastate carriers operating commercial motor vehicles transporting property with a gross vehicle weight, gross vehicle weight rating, gross combination weight, or gross combination weight rating greater than 10,000 pounds and up to 26,000 pounds, subject to the authority of the Idaho State Police, must comply with Sec. 391.15.
Age
Minimum age for intrastate commercial vehicle drivers is 18; interstate drivers must be 21 years old.
Driver qualification file
A driver qualification file (Sec. 391.51) is required.
Operator’s license
The driver’s license classifications are as follows:
Class | Description |
Class A | Combination vehicles with a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 lbs. or more provided the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle(s) being towed is greater than 10,000 lbs. |
Class B | Single vehicles with a GVWR of 26,001 lbs. or more, or any such vehicle towing a vehicle 10,000 pounds GVWR or less. |
Class C | Vehicles with a GVWR or GCWR less than 26,001 pounds, but designed to transport: |
— 16 or more occupants, including the driver; or | |
— hazardous materials requiring the vehicle to display placards | |
Class D | Vehicles not defined as Class A, B or C |
