Pole and utility vehicles/trailers – Idaho

The length of a truck tractor with stinger-steered pole trailer or log dolly, connected by a reach or pole, or a combination used for transporting long loads such as poles, pipes, logs or structural members generally capable of sustaining themselves as beams between supporting bunks or connections must not exceed 75 feet.

Pole-trailer lamp and reflector requirements

On every pole trailer more than 3,000 pounds gross weight:

• On each side, one side marker lamp and one clearance lamp which may be in combination, to show the front, side and rear; and
• On the rear of the pole trailer or load, two reflectors, one at each side.

On every pole trailer weighing 3,000 pounds gross or less:

• On the rear, two reflectors, one on each side; and
• On the front, two reflectors, one on each side.

Rear reflectors on a pole trailer may be mounted on each side of the bolster or load.

Escort vehicles

A pilot/escort vehicle is not required on the first movement from the forest of tree-length poles if the overall length does not exceed 110 feet. 

Key definitions

A “pole trailer” is defined as every vehicle without motive power designed to be drawn by another vehicle and attached to the towing vehicle by means of a reach or pole or by being boomed or otherwise secured to the towing vehicle, and ordinarily used for transporting long or irregularly shaped loads such as poles, pipes, or structural members capable, generally, of sustaining themselves as beams between the supporting connections.
