Federal regulations
District of Columbia has adopted Part 391 of the Federal Regulations.
Applicability
Part 391 applies to vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating or gross combination weight rating exceeding 10,000 pounds, and to any vehicle transporting hazardous materials requiring placards.
Age
21 years of age under the adopted 391.11(b)(1).
Driver qualification file
A driver qualification file (Sec. 391.51) is required.
Operator’s license
The license classes are as follows:
Class | Description |
---|---|
A | Any combination of vehicles with a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) greater than 26,000 pounds; provided that the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle(s) being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds or is a semi-trailer or trailer with two or more axles. |
B | Any single vehicle with a GVWR greater than 26,000 pounds and any such vehicle towing a vehicle not in excess of 10,000 pounds GVWR. |
C | Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,000 pounds or less, or any such vehicle towing a vehicle with a GVWR not in excess of 10,000 pounds if: a) the vehicle is designed to transport more than 15 passengers including the driver; or b) the vehicle is used in the transportation of hazardous materials which requires the vehicle to be placarded under 49 CFR Part 172 Subpart F. |
D | All non-commercial motor vehicles except Class M vehicles. |
M | Motorcycles. |
N | Mopeds and Motor-driven cycles. |
Endorsements | Description |
G | Vehicles owned by or leased to the District of Columbia. |
H | Vehicles transporting hazardous materials. |
T | Vehicles towing double and triple trailers. |
P | Vehicles carrying passengers. |
N | Tanker vehicles. |
S | School buses. |
X | A combination of hazardous materials and tanker vehicle endorsements. |
M | Motorcycles in addition to class of vehicles designated on driver’s license. |
