California follows the federal Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs).
- PFOA: 4 parts per trillion (ppt)
- PFOS: 4 ppt
However, state-specific guidance sets non-enforceable standards that are stricter than federal standards.
California’s Office of Environmental Health and Hazard Assessment adopted the following Public Health Goals (PHGs):
- PFOA: 0.007 ppt, and
- PFOS: 1 ppt.
PHGs aren’t enforceable MCLs. However, certain public water systems that exceed a contaminant’s PHG are required to:
- Report information to customers about health risks and treatment costs to return to the PHG, and
- Hold a public hearing on the report.
