A summary of the additional requirements includes the following:

• Employees may not use compressed air to clean clothing and may not direct compressed air at any other person.
• Effective means must be used to secure hose connections and to prevent hose whipping.
• Compressed air piping systems must be of adequate design and strength. Employers are to refer to recognized standards for material and design as developed by the American National Standards Institute.
• Non-metallic pipe must be recommended and listed by its manufacturer as being designed for compressed air or gas service. PVC pipe can’t be used for compressed air unless it is buried or encased. Plastic pipe must be “project specific” and designed for the application by a competent person. Only competent persons may install non-metallic piping systems.
• Steam and other high-temperature pipes must be covered with thermal insulation or otherwise protected from contact if they are within seven feet of a working surface. Steam hose connections must be secured and kept in a safe condition, and effective means must be used to prevent hose whipping.
