Federal: 29 CFR 1910.241, .242, .243, and .244
A summary of the additional requirements includes the following:
- Knives and cutting tools used in building and in-plant maintenance and repair are to be kept in sheathes or holders when they are not in use.
- Hand held pressure hoses and nozzles (used in building and in-plant maintenance and repair) that could cause injury when they are not being held (including air, water, hot water and steam, and all high temperature hoses or nozzles) are to have a constant pressure control.
- Tools and equipment used in building and in-plant maintenance and repair must be used only for their intended purpose. Tools and equipment cannot be altered, modified, or used for another purpose without the manufacturer's written approval or unless they are used under the direction of a competent person in accordance with accepted engineering requirements to prevent an additional hazard.
- There must be a safety device on the muzzle of pneumatically driven nailers, staplers, and other fastening equipment to prevent the tool from ejecting fasteners unless the muzzle is in contact with the work surface.
