Hearing protection - Hawaii

Hawaii incorporates by reference most of the July 1, 2017, edition of the federal OSHA general industry requirements for hearing protection; however, the state adds further requirements. A summary of the additional requirements includes the following:

• Hawaii amends 29 CFR 1910.95(b)(1), Table G-16, entitled Permissible Noise Exposures, by replacing the word "should" with the word "shall" in the footnotes. In other words, the combined effect of two or more periods of noise exposure of different levels "shall" be considered rather than the individual effect of each. Exposure to impulsive or impact noise "shall" not exceed 140 dB peak sound pressure level.
• Hawaii's HAR 12-60-50 lists state-specific definitions that differ from federal OSHA's definitions.
