In Iowa, a person may not use a hand-held electronic communication device to write, send, or view an electronic message while driving a vehicle.
This prohibition does not apply to:
- Use by law enforcement and emergency personnel;
- Receiving safety-related information including emergency, traffic, or weather alerts;
- A stopped vehicle not on the traveled portion of the roadway;
- Use of a global positioning system or navigation system; or
- Engaging in a call by:
- Selecting or entering a phone number or name in a hand-held phone, or
- Activating, deactivating, or initiating a function of a hand-held phone.
