Michigan incorporates by reference the federal regulations for Non-Hazardous Solid Waste and Recycling; however, the state adds further requirements.
A summary of the additional requirements includes the following:
- A recycling establishment shall annually register with the department on a form provided by the department and containing the recycling establishment's name, location, postal mailing address, electronic mail address, and telephone number and the name of the recycling establishment's contact person. The recycling establishment shall register each year by July 1. However, a recycling establishment established after the effective date of this section and after June 1 but not after December 1 shall first register not later than 30 days after it is established.
- The Michigan Bottle Deposit Law (or Bottle Bill) was initiated in 1976. It is a petition to initiate legislation to provide for the use of returnable containers for soft drinks, soda water, carbonated natural or mineral water or other non-alcoholic carbonated drink; beer, ale or other malt drink of whatever alcoholic content. A dealer within this state shall not sell, offer for sale, or give to a consumer a non-returnable container or a beverage in a non-returnable container.
