Michigan has adopted many federal OSHA standards and incorporates them by reference. The Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) plan has no additional heat injury and illness prevention regulations; however, there is a state emphasis program (SEP) to help employers identify and reduce exposure to heat-related injury and illness.
As part of the SEP, employers are encouraged to use a sample template to establish a program to evaluate, prevent, and treat heat-related illness in their facilities. Some prevention and treatment options include:
- Monitoring the heat index and planning for when the heat index will be 90 degrees Fahrenheit or higher;
- Providing water and access to cooling areas or shade;
- Developing an emergency response plan;
- Training for employees and supervisors around heat illness; and more.
