Summary of differences between federal and state regulations
Alabama has no direct law that correlates to federal COBRA. However, there is a law prohibiting insurers from terminating health coverage for someone who is the subject of domestic abuse, where the subject of abuse does not qualify for coverage under the federal COBRA because coverage originally was issued in the name of the abuser and the abuser has divorced, separated from, or lost custody of the abused; or the abuser’s coverage has terminated voluntarily or involuntarily.
Under federal COBRA, there is no specific provision for subjects of abuse. Federal COBRA applies to employees in Alabama.
