Virginia has adopted Part 393 of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSRs), in effect as of October 1, 2025.
Part 393 applies to vehicles over 26,000 pounds gross vehicle weight rating or gross combination weight rating, or gross vehicle weight or gross combination weight, whichever is greater, and vehicles of any size used to transport hazardous materials in a quantity requiring placarding.
Backup Alarm | Garbage trucks and highway maintenance vehicles with a GVWR ≥ 10,001 lbs. must be equipped with a backup alarm that meets specifications. |
First Aid Kit | No requirements |
Mudflaps | All vehicles exceeding a licensed gross weight of 40,000 lbs. must be equipped in the rear with suitable mudguards or fenders capable of substantially preventing the projection of water, rocks, dirt, or other substances to the rear. Exception: This requirement does not apply to vehicles engaged in the hauling of logs and tractor trucks. |
Tires | Studded Tires - No tire may have any block, stud, flange, cleat, spike, or any other protuberance of any material other than rubber projecting beyond the tread surface of the tire. |
Tire Chains - Tire chains of reasonable size are allowed when required for safety because of snow, ice, or other conditions tending to cause a vehicle to skid. |
