CMV parts and maintenance - Massachusetts
Massachusetts has adopted Part 393 of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSRs).
Part 393 applies to vehicles having a gross vehicle weight rating, gross vehicle weight, gross combination weight rating, or gross combination weight of 10,001 pounds or more that are used for the transportation of property, and vehicles transporting a placardable amount of hazardous materials.
| Back-Up Alarms | Every commercial motor vehicle, or trailer weighing, with its load, > 12,000 lbs., and used to deliver gasoline or other flammable material, must be equipped with an audible warning system when the vehicle’s transmission is in reverse. |
| Dump-Body Alarms | Every motor vehicle truck with dump bodies must be equipped with an adequate audible warning system to alert the operator when the dump body is in an upright and elevated position. |
| First Aid Kit | No requirements |
| Mudflaps | Every vehicle or trailer must be equipped with suitable guards which will effectively reduce the spray or splash to the rear of mud, water or slush caused by the rear wheels of the motor vehicle or trailer. |
| Tires | Studded Tires - Studded tires are permissible in Massachusetts between November 1 and May 1. |
