Iowa has adopted Part 393 of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSRs), as it existed on October 1, 2023.
Part 393 applies to commercial vehicles with a gross weight or combined gross weight of 10,001 or more pounds, as well as to commercial vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating or gross combination weight rating of 10,001 or more pounds. Vehicles transporting hazardous materials requiring placarding are also subject.
Part 393 does not apply to combination vehicles provided the gross vehicle weight rating of the power unit is 10,000 pounds or less and the gross combination weight rating is 26,000 pounds or less.

Tires | Studded Tires - No tires may have blocks, studs, flanges, cleats, spikes or other protuberances of any material other than rubber which project beyond the tread surface. Exception: From November 1 to April 1, a vehicle may use pneumatic tires with inserted ice grips or tire studs projecting not more than one-sixteenth inch beyond the tread of the traction surface of the tire. |
Tire Chains - Tire chains of reasonable size may be used on any vehicle when required for safety because of snow, ice, or other conditions tending to cause a vehicle to skid. |
