Indiana has adopted Part 393 of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSRs).
Part 393 applies to for-hire carriers operating motor vehicles exclusively in intrastate commerce that have a gross vehicle weight, gross vehicle weight rating, gross combination weight, or gross combination weight rating of 10,001 pounds or more.
Part 393 applies to private carriers operating motor vehicles exclusively in intrastate commerce that have a gross vehicle weight, gross vehicle weight rating, gross combination weight, or gross combination weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more.
Part 393 applies to any size vehicle (for-hire or private) transporting a placardable amount of hazardous materials.

| Tires | Studded Tires - No tire may have blocks, studs, flanges, cleats, spikes, or other protuberances of any material other than rubber projecting beyond the tread surface. Exception: From October 1 to May 1, a vehicle may use tires which have inserted ice grips or tire studs of wear-resisting material, installed in a manner that provides resiliency upon contact with the road, with projections that do not exceed three thirty-seconds of an inch beyond the tread of the traction surface of the tire and constructed to prevent damage to the road surface. |
| Tire Chains - Tire chains of reasonable size may be used on any vehicle when required for safety because of snow, ice, or other conditions causing a vehicle to skid. |
