Idaho has adopted Part 393 of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, as published and annually recompiled.
Part 393 applies to intrastate carriers operating commercial motor vehicles transporting property with a gross vehicle weight, gross vehicle weight rating, gross combination weight, or gross combination weight rating greater than 10,000 pounds, and intrastate carriers transporting placardable quantities of hazardous material subject to the authority of the Idaho State Police.
| First Aid Kit | No requirements |
| Mudflaps | Every truck, bus, semitrailer, or trailer must be equipped with fenders or covers, which may include flaps or splash aprons, over and to the rear of the wheels not more than 10 inches above the roadway when vehicle is empty. The fender or cover must be capable at all times of arresting and deflecting such dirt, mud, water or other substance. |
| Tires | Studded Tires - No tire may have any block, stud, flange, cleat, spike, or other protuberance of any material other than rubber projecting beyond the tread surface. Tires with built-in lugs of tungsten carbide, or other suitable materials (studs) that will not unduly damage the highway, may be used when required for safety because of snow, ice, or other conditions tending to cause a vehicle to skid. Motor vehicles, trailers, and semitrailers with tires having built in studs are prohibited on public highways from May 1 to September 30 unless a special exemption is granted by the Idaho Transportation Board or the studs are retractable and meet the requirements of 49-948 of the Idaho Statutes. |
| Tire Chains - Tire chains may be used. Tire chains are required on Interstate 90 at Lookout Pass and Fourth of July Pass and on State Highway 12 at Lolo Pass when conditions warrant as determined by the Idaho Department of Transportation. Notice will be given and signs posted when chains are required. |
