CMV parts and maintenance - Delaware
Delaware has adopted Part 393 of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSRs), with future amendments.
Part 393 applies to a single vehicle or a vehicle in combination operated in intrastate commerce with a gross vehicle weight rating or gross vehicle weight over 26,000 pounds, and any size vehicle hauling hazardous materials requiring placards.

| Mudflaps | Every bus or commercial motor vehicle operated on highways with a gross weight ≥ 8,000 lbs., including semitrailers and trailers, must be equipped with suitable metal protectors or substantial flexible flaps behind the rearmost wheels of the vehicle or combination to prevent the projection of rocks, dirt, water, or other substances to the rear and minimize side spray. The flap, shield or other device shall extend down from the vehicle’s body to not more than 8 ins. above the road surface, but not more than 15 ins. when the vehicle is in an unloaded condition. The protector flap shall extend laterally at least the width of the tire being protected. Exception : If the bus or commercial motor vehicle, including semitrailers and trailers, is designed or constructed so that the metal protector or flexible flap requirement listed above can be met due to fender or body construction or other means of enclosure, either permanent or temporary, the requirement has been met. |
| Tires | Studded Tires - No tire may have blocks, studs, flanges, cleats, spikes, or other protuberances of any material other than rubber projecting beyond the tread surface. Exception: The use of studded tires is permitted from October 15 to April 15. |
| Tire Chains - Tire chains of reasonable size may be used on any vehicle when required for safety because of snow, ice, or other conditions causing a vehicle to slide or skid. |
