State Info
Missouri has adopted Part 396 of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSRs).
Part 396 applies to commercial motor vehicles operated in intrastate commerce which have a gross vehicle weight rating or gross combination weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more, or vehicles transporting hazardous materials.
| Annual Inspections - Motor Carrier | The State Highway Patrol administers an official mandatory periodic vehicle inspection program. Inspection is required biennially and prior to the time of registration. Used motor vehicles sold must be inspected prior to sale if less than six years old. The inspections are conducted at officially designated inspection stations and upon approval, an inspection sticker is affixed. Section 307.170(7) requires all commercial vehicles and trailers to be equipped and maintained so as to obtain a certificate of inspection and approval as required by the provisions of 307.360 RSMO. Exceptions: New motor vehicles which have not been previously titled and registered are exempt from the official inspection for five years prior to the initial motor vehicle registration or the next succeeding registration required by law. Also exempt from the official inspection are motor vehicles engaged in interstate commerce and proportionately registered with the Motor Carrier Services Unit of the Missouri Department of Transportation. Trailers are no longer required to be inspected, except for VIN verification. |
