Maryland has adopted Part 396 of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSRs), as amended.
Part 396 applies to vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating or gross combination weight rating of 10,001 or more pounds as well as to anyone transporting hazardous materials requiring placarding.
| Annual Inspections - Motor Carrier | Maryland has an inspection program for commercial motor vehicles > 10,000 lbs. as well as for certain other vehicles registered in Maryland. Each vehicle must be inspected at least once every 12 months or at least every 25,000 miles, whichever comes first. A truck-tractor that has been in operation for not more than five years from the vehicle’s model year must be inspected once every 12 months or 35,000 miles, whichever comes first. Dump trucks 18 years or older must be inspected once every 6 months or 12,500 miles, whichever comes first. Records of the inspection are to be maintained for 2 years. This inspection program is considered equivalent to the federal annual inspection requirement in Part 396. |
