Kansas has adopted Part 396 of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSRs), as in effect on October 1, 2022.
Part 396 applies to vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating, gross combination weight rating, gross vehicle weight, or gross combination weight of 10,001 pounds or more, or vehicles transporting hazardous materials requiring placarding.
Exception: Private motor carriers domiciled in Kansas operating vehicles with a GVWR, GCWR, GVW, GCW of 10,001 lbs. to 26,000 lbs. must comply with 396.17 (periodic/annual inspection) and are exempt from compliance with the rest of Part 396. This exemption does not apply to motor vehicles which are used in the transportation of hazardous materials and required to be placarded
