In Massachusetts, an operator of a vehicle may not use a phone unless the device is being used in hands-free mode.
An operator of a motor vehicle may not read or view text, images, or video displayed on a phone.
These prohibitions do not apply to:
- Communication with law enforcement or other emergency services;
- Use by law enforcement and emergency personnel;
- Viewing a map generated by a navigation application on a phone mounted on or affixed to a vehicle’s windshield, dashboard, or center console that does not impede the operation of the vehicle; or
- A parked vehicle.
