Cargo loading and securement - Ohio
Ohio has adopted Part 393 of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSRs), as effective on August 1, 2025.
The adoption includes regulations dealing with projecting loads (393.87) and cargo securement (Part 393, Subpart I).
Part 393 applies to vehicles operated by for-hire carriers with a gross vehicle weight rating or gross combination weight rating, or gross vehicle weight or gross combination weight of 10,001 pounds or more (whichever is greater).
Part 393 applies to vehicles operated by private carriers with a gross combination weight rating or gross combination weight of 26,001 pounds or more, whichever is greater, inclusive of a towed unit(s) with a gross vehicle weight rating or gross vehicle weight of more than 10,000 pounds, or a single vehicle operated by a private carrier with a gross vehicle weight rating or gross vehicle weight of 26,001 pounds or more.
Part 393 also applies to any size vehicle (for-hire or private) transporting a placardable amount of hazardous materials.
In Ohio, no vehicle may be driven or moved on any highway unless the vehicle is constructed, loaded, or covered as to prevent any of its load from dropping, sifting, leaking, or otherwise escaping.
This requirement does not apply to the following:
- The dropping of sand or other substances to secure traction, or
- The sprinkling of water or other substances to clean or maintain the roadway.
