Louisiana has adopted Part 393 of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSRs), revised as of January 1, 2021, and subsequent amendments.
The adoption includes regulations dealing with projecting loads (393.87) and cargo securement (Part 393, Subpart I).
Part 393 applies to all intrastate commercial motor vehicles with a single or combined gross vehicle weight or gross vehicle weight rating over 26,000 pounds, and all vehicles transporting hazardous materials.
In Louisiana, loads on any vehicle must not drop, sift, leak, or otherwise escape and must be securely fastened to prevent the covering or load from becoming loose, detached, or a hazard to other highway users.
This requirement does not apply to dropping:
- Sand on a highway to secure traction, or
- A liquid substance on a highway to clean or maintain the highway.
