Cargo loading and securement - Connecticut
Connecticut has adopted Part 393 of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSRs), by reference with subsequent amendments as they occur. The adoption includes regulations dealing with projecting loads (393.87) and cargo securement (Part 393, Subpart I).
Part 393 applies to intrastate commercial motor vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating or gross combination weight rating or gross vehicle weight or gross combination weight of 18,001 pounds or more, and to any size commercial motor vehicle transporting hazardous materials requiring placards.
In Connecticut, a vehicle must be constructed or loaded to prevent any of its load from dropping, sifting, leaking or otherwise escaping from the vehicle.
This requirement does not apply to:
- The dropping of sand for traction, or
- The sprinkling of water or other substances to clean or maintain the road.
The load and any covering on the load must be securely fastened to prevent the covering or load from becoming loose, detached, or in any manner a hazard to other users of the highway.
