No. The MILs are not discussed in any of the safety regulations that apply to vehicles. However, if the MIL is indicating the engine is about to fail, an officer could stop the vehicle from operating under §396.7, which prohibits the operation of vehicles that are likely to breakdown or cause an accident. Also, if the officer is working in a state that allows the officer to enforce the environmental regulations, specifically the state’s clean air regulations, the officer could cite the driver and/or vehicle for operating the vehicle in a condition that is not compliant with the clean air regulations.
