If the paint thinner falls under OSHA’s definition of a flammable liquid, then it must be stored in an “approved container.” An open bucket is not an “approved” container, which would have a self-closing lid and be vapor tight.
The only exception is for flammable liquids kept for less than 30 days. This exception is found at 1910.106(d)(1)(ii)(c).
