In the cold months employees may want to wear a winter liner under a hard hat. Any item worn under a hard hat must be specifically designed to be compatible with the protective properties of the helmets. The use of a “winter liner” specifically designed to be compatible with the hard hat’s protective properties is not prohibited. OSHA recommends that employers permit only liners that are specifically designed to be compatible with the protective properties of the hard hat.
