For U.S. drivers to cross the border and operate in Canada, they need the proper clearances to enter the country. Certain criminal convictions can make a person inadmissible in to Canada, and it’s best to know about this before any drivers arrive at the border. It is also a good idea to double-check, even if you are certain that drivers meet the requirements. Contacting CBSA/Immigration is recommended.
Drivers will also require passports or passport cards to enter Canada and return to the United States. Some states issue enhanced driver’s licenses for border crossing purposes. A Free and Secure Trade (FAST) card will also work.
To ensure a smooth border crossing from the U.S. into Canada, follow these guidelines:
If you’re a U.S. citizen aged 16 years or older, make sure to carry one of the following documents:
Passport
Passport Card
Enhanced Driver’s License (EDL)
Enhanced ID Card (ID)
Permanent Residents: If you’re a permanent resident of either Canada or the U.S., bring your Permanent Resident Card.
