Question: Can a driver fill out a single driver vehicle inspection report (DVIR) for a tractor and trailer for defects at the end of the day, or are separate DVIRs required for each?
Answer: Under the interpretations to 396.11, a driver may complete one DVIR covering both the tractor and trailer in a combination, provided:
Both vehicles are identified on the DVIR; and
If any defects are listed, the DVIR specifies which vehicle the defect is on.
Some carriers, for operational or recordkeeping reasons, will require the driver to fill out two separate DVIRs. This is done under company policies, not per the regulations.
