Wildfires are considered a natural emission source, and while still impactful to human health and safety, GHG emissions from wildfires are tracked separately. By estimating GHG and criteria pollutant emissions from wildfires, the California Air Resources Board (or CARB) can quantify the natural carbon stored against clear trends of carbon loss in the state’s natural and working lands.
