Federal: 29 CFR 1910.1001 and Appendices A through J
A summary of the additional requirements includes the following:
- Asbestos containing material is to be examined periodically (at least annually) to detect deterioration. Damaged or deteriorated asbestos is to be repaired, enclosed, encapsulated, or removed in accordance with the provisions of 29 CFR 1926.1101 in OAR 437, Division 3, Construction.
- Piping systems that have asbestos insulation material are to be labeled:
Danger Contains Asbestos Fiber
Avoid Creating Dust
Cancer and Lung Disease Hazard - Signs, placards, process sheets, batch tickets, operating procedures, or other written materials may be used in lieu of affixing labels to individual pipes, as long as the alternative method identifies the pipe(s) to which it is applicable and conveys the required information. The written materials are to be readily accessible to the employees in their work areas during each shift. (OAR Chapter 437, Division 2-Z, Hazard Communication, 1910.1200.)
- For asbestos insulation on piping systems, labeling is to be on unobstructed continuous pipe runs, at a minimum of every 75 feet.
