OSHA says that a personal eyewash (i.e., eyewash bottles) does not meet the requirement under 1910.151(c) for “suitable” facilities for quick drenching or flushing of the eyes and body. Personal eyewashes can be used to support a plumbed or self-contained equipment, but cannot replace them because they cannot supply the required 15 minutes of continuous flushing. For this reason, personal eyewashes can only be used for immediate flushing until an employee reaches a compliant plumbed or self-contained unit.
