Electronic logs are currently optional, but ELDs will be required for most interstate commercial motor vehicle drivers (and many in-state-only drivers as well) by no later than December 18, 2017, which is two years after the ELD regulations were officially published. Drivers voluntarily using a compliant automatic on-board recording device (AOBRD, see 395.15) by the December 18, 2017, deadline will be “grandfathered” for two years and can continue using the AOBRD until December 16, 2019. This extension gives AOBRD providers time to update their systems to be compliant with the ELD standards.
