Tennessee has adopted 390.15 of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSRs). Section 390.15 includes accident recordkeeping requirements.
Section 390.15 applies to commercial motor vehicles operated in intrastate commerce to transport property that have a gross vehicle weight rating or gross combination weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more, or a motor vehicle of any gross vehicle weight transporting hazardous materials.
Accident reporting - Motor carrier
| Notification | A written report must be made to the Department of Safety if the accident involves:- Death
- Personal injury or
- Property damage ≥ $1,500 or more.

Obtaining an accident report
| Procedure | A copy of an official accident report may be obtained by any of the parties involved by writing to the Department of Safety and sending the required fee or by visiting the Tennessee Highway Patrol District Office. Request should include the:- Name(s) of the driver(s) involved
- Date of the accident and
- County in which the accident occurred
