Montana has adopted 390.15 of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSRs), as updated through March 26, 2025. Section 390.15 includes accident recordkeeping requirements.
Section 390.15 applies to intrastate operation of vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating, gross combination weight rating, gross vehicle weight, or gross combination weight of 26,001 or more pounds, or vehicles used to transport hazardous materials of a type or quantity that require the vehicle to be placarded.
Accident reporting - Motor carrier
| Notification | A written report must be filed by the driver to the Accident Records Department of the Montana Highway Patrol if the accident results in:

Obtaining an accident report
| Procedure | A “Crash Release Form” (HQ1511) must be completed. The form is available via the Montana Highway Patrol website: https://dojmt.gov/highwaypatrol/crash-records/ |
