Minnesota has incorporated by reference 390.15 of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSRs). Section 390.15 includes accident recordkeeping requirements.

Section 390.15 applies to motor vehicles that have a gross vehicle weight, gross vehicle weight rating, gross combination weight, or gross combination weight rating of 10,001 pounds or more, or hauling hazardous materials required to be placarded.

Accident reporting - Motor carrier

NotificationThe driver of any vehicle involved in an accident must notify local law enforcement if the accident results in:
  • Death
  • Injury or
  • Damage to any vehicle or property.

Obtaining an accident report

ProcedureA copy of an official accident report may be obtained by sending a request in writing to the Department of Public Safety. Such a request must be signed by an authorized requestor.
