Iowa has adopted 390.15 of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSRs), as it existed on October 1, 2023. Section 390.15 includes accident recordkeeping requirements.
Section 390.15 applies to motor vehicles that have a gross vehicle weight, gross vehicle weight rating, gross combination weight, or gross combination weight rating of 10,001 pounds or more, or hauling hazardous materials required to be placarded.
Section 390.15 does not apply to combination vehicles provided the gross vehicle weight rating of the power unit is 10,000 pounds or less and the gross combination weight rating is 26,000 pounds or less.
Accident reporting - Motor carrier
| Notification | Motor vehicle accidents involving personal injury or death must be reported to the nearest office of the State Patrol or the nearest law enforcement officer. The driver must submit a written report to the Department of Transportation if the accident results in:

Obtaining an accident report
| Procedure | A copy of an official officer’s accident report may be obtained only by any party to an accident, his/her insurance company or agent, or his/her attorney by sending a request in writing to the Office of Drivers Services, Department of Transportation. Request must include date of accident, time, location, and names of drivers and driver’s licenses of drivers involved.
